FNSEA, the main French farmers' union, and food manufacturers have slammed the door of the High Council of Biotechnology, responsible for deciding genetically modified organisms
Christiane Lambert, vice president of the FNSEA, has reported a "very strong pressure exerted by opponents of GMOs" because of the elections. "It is not clear what the government wants to do" concerning this issue, the union official states. A letter expressing this idea was sent to Prime Minister Francois Fillon. In this document FNSEA and the National Association of Food Industries (ANIA) "regret the lack of consensus [...] even on the intention to set up rules for a true coexistence of GMO and non GMO in France".
"The resigning do not admit that we denounce the consequences of coexistence of channels [GMO and non GMO] while they are recognized for years," responded the associations of environmental protection (France Nature Environnement, the Farmers Confederation, Friends of the Earth, the National Union of French apiculture and the National Federation of Organic Agriculture), who called the government "not to bow to unacceptable threats of those who want to impose GMOs to the French by force ".
